Internet trolls have become an unfortunate part of political discourse, but rarely do they cause actual, physical harm aside from lobbing unsettling threats from their moms’ basements.

But one troll crossed the line last night and given Newsweek writer Kurt Eichenwald a medical seizure by Tweeting a flashing strobe light at the outspoken Donald Trump opponent.

Eichenwald is known to have epilepsy and trolls have tried to give him seizures in the past through email, although unsuccessfully.

Well, this time, one may have succeeded. Last night Eichenwald was having an anti-Trump Twitter meltdown after a fiery interview with Tucker Carlson, and was attracting a sizable number of trolls in his mentions.

One troll called @jew_goldstein (now suspended by Twitter) replied to one of his Tweets with a .gif of a strobe light.  The .gif said something along the lines of “You deserve a seizure for that post.”

Eichenwald’s wife then replied, using his account, saying he’d had a seizure and that she was contacting law enforcement.

On Friday, Eichenwald told his Twitter followers that, indeed, he had a seizure and is working with the police to find the one responsible,

The event harkens back to a time in Internet history where 4chan hackers hacked the website of the Epilepsy Foundation and put strobe lights on the home page. The tactic is nothing new but can certainly cause harm.
