A single mom in Atlanta, Georgia was stopped from entering her daughter’s school dance because she was dressed up as a man.
Amy Peterson is the single mother of a 6-year-old daughter name Gracie. When it was time for Gracie’s school’s father-daughter dance, Peterson wanted to do what she could to not make Gracie feel left out. In order to do so she decided to dress up as Gracie’s “dad”, but school officialls turned her away because she was not a man.
“I was trying to comply with the rules,” Peterson told local news. “I knew if I showed up as her mom, they probably wouldn’t have let me in.” Peterson went full out with the costume, creating a beard out of mascara and even using cologne to complete the “manly” appearance. She and Gracie were all set to leave for the dance when they got a call from the school’s principal.
“She caught rumor that her (Gracie’s) mother was bringing her and she forbid us to come,” Peterson said, “and if we showed up we would be turned away”. Peterson called the school’s bluff, but they held firm to their promise not to let them enter.
School officials say they apologized to Peterson and refunded her the cost of tickets to the dance, but Peterson says she has not received either. Peterson also says she will now be homeschooling her daughter.
