A group of scientists at Belgium’s University of Ghent have pioneered a new manner of concocting beer through the purification of an unlikely source: urine.
Here’s how it works: the urine is gathered into a tank that is heated by a solar-powered boiler. It is then filtered through a membrane that not only separates recycled water to make beer, but also collects useful fertilizers.
Given the low-cost nature of this self-sufficient, electricity-free method of creating pure water and fertilizer content, the team believes there is a possibility to provide a sustainable method of farming in developing countries. As for the beer, the scientists have plans to incorporate their machines into soccer stadiums, airports and shopping centers in the future, once the technology is ready.
