Craving a rumor-peppered slice this lunchtime? This is not your lucky day.
Comet Ping Pong, the famous D.C pizzeria at the center of the wild and debunked conspiracy theory “Pizzagate”—which falsely alleges that various Democratic politicos, including Hillary Clinton, run a satanic cult and child sex ring out of its basement—will stay closed today in solidarity with its immigrant workers protesting Trump’s immigration policies.
“We stand with our staff in solidarity for A Day Without Immigrants. We will be closed on Thursday, February 16” reads an announcement on its website.
Many of Washington’s best known dining establishments, as well as thousands of other restaurants nationwide will be closing their doors or offering limited service today in support of the “Day Without Immigrants” one-off strike.
The campaign, which spread widely on social media, calls on foreign-born people around the country, irrespective of status, to refrain from shopping and not attend work or school for one day to show the current administration the importance of immigrant labor to the U.S. economy.
Since taking office, President Trump and his administration have ramped up immigration enforcement with the signing of executive orders banning entry to the country for people from seven Muslim-majority countries and withholding funding from “sanctuary cities.”
This past week alone, federal immigration officials arrested at least 680 undocumented migrants around the country in coordinated nationwide Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids.
The son of Trump’s former National Security Adviser, Michael Flynn, 33, was kicked out of the president-elect’s transition team in December after fanning the flames on the Pizzagate conspiracy theory in a since-deleted tweet.
The claims leveled against Comet Ping Pong by Pizzagaters had led a man who wanted to “self-investigate” the rumor, to open fire in the pizzeria in December. Fortunately, no one was injured during the incident.
On Monday, Trump also fired Flynn Sr, after he was found to have engaged in secret talks with the Russian ambassador about lifting economic sanctions against Moscow.
