Let symbolism ring!
Images of a darkened Statue of Liberty triggered an outpouring of metaphors and a conspiracy theory or two across social media on Tuesday evening. That’s after the lights went out for a couple of hours on the colossal and most famous American statue, located in New York’s Harbor.
“A portion of the lighting system that illuminates the Statue of Liberty experienced a temporary, unplanned outage tonight,” National Park Service spokesman Jerry Willis told CBS2 in a statement Tuesday. He said the official cause will be determined when workers return Wednesday.
But this was the NPS’s theory, and it looked fairly benign:
“Some lights on the Statue were temporarily off tonight. Likely related to new emergency generator/Hurricane Sandy recovery project work” wrote @StatueEllisNPS on Twitter.
Still, Twitter images of the darkened 305-foot-tall Lady Liberty were just a little unsettling:
