The father of Omar Mateen, the gunman who killed 49 and injured more than 50 others in an Orlando gay nightclub over the weekend, posted a video to Facebook early Monday morning in an attempt to explain how little he knew of his sons plans. He ended up making news himself.
Seddique Mir Mateen, who hosts a show on Afghani television, told viewers that he was “saddened” by his son’s actions and while he was “not aware what motivated him to go into a gay club and kill 50 people,” he added: “God will punish those involved in homosexuality,” saying it is “not an issue that humans should deal with.”
The elder Mateen has already come under scrutiny for videos posted to his YouTube page. Mateen considers himself the President of Afghanistan, running a “government in exile,” and has used his “Durand Jiga Show,” which airs on an Afghan station in California, to praise the Taliban. He regularly decries the American-supported official Afghani government, claims to have his own intelligence agency, and ties to Congress (he has met with several congressmen).
On Sunday, Seddique Mateen claimed that his son had been “angered” by two men he witnessed kissing in Miami several months ago. His commentary this morning could shed some light, however, on how his son may have developed the ideology that led him to murder 49 individuals in Orlando.
