This 70-Year-Old Kansas Man Got Arrested for Robbing a Bank Because He Wanted to Escape His Wife

A 70-year-old man robbed a Kansas City bank and waited for police to arrive because he’d “rather be in jail than at home” with his wife, according federal court documents.

Lawrence John Ripple was charged with the robbery last week, the Kansas City Star reports. Ripple reported arrived at the bank, which was located on the same block as Kansas City police headquarters, and handed a note to the teller that read, “I have a gun, give me money.”

The teller complied with Ripple’s demands, but Ripple did not flee after receiving the cash. Instead, he sat down in the lobby of the bank and waited. According to court documents, when Ripple was eventually approached by a bank security guard, he turned himself in, telling the guard, “I’m the guy you’re looking for.”

During questioning by investigators, Ripple said he had recently been in an argument with his wife, and “no longer wanted to be in that situation.” Ripple also allegedly wrote out the demand note he used at the bank in front of his wife and told her “he’d rather be in jail than at home,” according to an FBI affidavit.
