British astronaut Major Tom Peake became the second person to complete a full marathon while in space, beating the previous record set by Sunita Williams in 2007.

Peake ran the marathon on Sunday, April 24, in 3 hours and 35 minutes – 17 minutes slower than his previous Earth-based time but nevertheless enough to earn him a Guinness World Record.

To recreate the marathon, the astronaut used his iPad to show the roads around London as he ran, strapped down to a treadmill. The equipment had been specifically designed to counter the lack of gravity aboard.

While Peake was running his 42km marathon, the International Space Station itself traveled almost 100,000 km. Nearly 40,000 runners took part in the 36th London Marathon, with Peake providing a countdown to start the race.
