He may not have gotten the nod as a potential vice president, but former Congressman Newt Gingrich could still play a role in a Trump presidency.  The native of Harrisburg, Pa. is widely regarded as one of American politics’ most brilliant minds, an experienced leader, a passionate speaker and great debater. He is also, however, a bit of a loose cannon and has more than a few skeletons in his closet, which may explain why Trump passed him over for the vice presidential post.

Here are a few reasons why Gingrich and Trump might have worked well as a team, as well as as some trivia about Gingrich that might have escaped notice:

  1. Only three years older than Trump, Gingrich, and the GOP candidate can definitely bond over the fact that by their early 70s both candidates have had a few ex-wives. Three each to be more precise. Gingrich is 73 years old.
  2. In June, Gingrich said that a new House Un-American Activities Committee should be created to prevent U.S. citizens who might be planning to commit terrorist attacks from doing so. “We originally created the House Un-American Activities Committee to go after Nazis. We passed several laws in 1938 and 1939 to go after Nazis and we made it illegal to help the Nazis. We’re going to presently have to go take the similar steps here,” he told CNN. This group was originally set up to investigate individuals suspected of having Nazi and communist ties. Trump is no fan of illegal immigrants and thinks we should build a wall… so ‘great minds think alike?’
  3. Gingrich is about $4.63 million dollars in debt from his own unsuccessful presidential campaign in 2012. We sympathize. Maybe billionaire Donald Trump can help him out.
  4. Gingrich is just as fun as Trump when it comes to making audacious statements. In the 2012 election he called for a moon colony to be built by 2020. Speaking of fiction, Gingrich is an avid writer who has published 28 books — some of which became New York Times best-sellers. Don’t worry he writes non-fiction too…
  5. In their spare time, to reignite the flame, Gingrich and his wife Callista like to produce historical and public policy documentaries. Isn’t that fun?
