Michael Flynn resigned his position as White House national security adviser on Monday amid the growing controversy surrounding his communication with Russian officials since the election.

Journalists were particularly happy to hear the news. They have been celebrating Flynn’s resignation on social media as a victory for the media, and a validation of their own importance.

“The Flynn story is a reminder of a big truth: Journalism lives,” tweeted New Yorker writer Evan Osnos. “And principled public servants who got the story out are hidden heroes.”

Many others used their social media account to express their agreement with this sentiment. “Flynn news proves the importance of resourced and unafraid journalism,” tweeted Paul Raushenbush. “Support your media by subscribing!”

Globe and Mail columnist Tabatha Southey praised “the grace of good journalism” for ousting the “terrifying” Flynn from his White House position. David Frum, a senior editor at The Atlantic, wrote that Flynn’s resignation served as a reminder of “why patriots should cherish a free and independent press.”

CNN’s Brian Stelter, a member of the media who covers other members of the media, was particularly enthused. He praised the journalists at the Washington Post, the New York Times, and other outlets who either elicited or were given classified information by federal officials that contradicted Flynn’s public accounts of his conversations with Russian officials. This was “a big moment for investigative journalism,” Stelter said.
