Kim Cattrall believes starring in Sex and the City cost her her marriage.
The 60-year-old actress played Samantha Jones in the U.S. TV show, which aired from 1998 until 2004. During that time, she was married to audio engineer Mark Levinson, with the pair’s union coming to an end the same year the show’s original run concluded.
In a new interview with Australia’s Daily Telegraph newspaper, Kim has revealed her relationship with Mark – her third marriage – broke down because of her commitments with the programme.
“It cost me my marriage, because I was never home,” she said. “I was never there and my husband got lonely and upset and competitive, and it was really difficult, it was really hard.”
Despite Kim’s admission, it came as something as a shock to her many fans when she and Mark announced the end of their marriage in 2004, just two years after they’d collaborated on a sex book entitled Satisfaction: The Art of the Female Orgasm.
While she has been linked to various famous men, Kim has not gone public with a relationship since the end of her third marriage. And during a chat with Australian radio station Nova FM, she admitted playing sexually liberated Samantha has led to men feeling afraid of her because they are unable to differentiate between her and her character.
“I think it’s sort of a doubled-edged sword in a way because it’s a great compliment, but at the same time, I’m not like that character in any way,” she sighed. “It can sometimes get in the way, especially if you’re dating.” Kim reprised her role for the Sex and the City spin-off film in 2008 and its sequel Sex and the City 2 in 2010.
