American actor Steven Seagal, long washed up in the U.S., has successfully relaunched himself in Russia, which has treated the aging Hollywood star with particular pride.
Last week, Seagal best known for his action movies ’80s and ’90s, received his Russian passport, with President Vladimir Putin personally presenting him with the new document in an alleged gesture of “normalization” between Russia and the U.S.
And by the end of the week, Seagal was already starring in a new commercial for Russian biggest phone provider, Megafon, where he played a Russian tough guy. The add was aired on national TV and was meant to nod to Seagal’s newly acquired citizenship.
Set on a snowy street, the ad shows him wearing a fur coat and a traditional Russian fur hat with earflaps as he’s confronted by a gang of thugs. Seagal then takes out his “Megafon” and dictates a threat to the hooligans on his phone.
“Tender snow crunches under the feet … like the bones of my enemies. What is it you want, friends?” he talks into the translation app, as it speaks back in Russian.
The thugs then leave saying: “Guys, he is one of ours.”
Before the ad is over Seagal turns to the screen and wishes the viewers happy holidays, this time in Russian.
The word “ours” is specially emphasized twice in this ad.
