I think Richard Jefferson’s got a really good point here. Now, I know Cavaliers fans are gonna boo Draymond Green as he returns from his testicle-swiping suspension for Game 6. They will. I probably would. Booing is fun. It’s fine.
… but is it effective? Quite possibly not! As Jefferson — who, like Green, played in front of much bigger, crazier crowds when he was just a kid — explains, Draymond Green is a seasoned performer in an adversarial climate. He’s totally comfortable being a heel, and indeed the hormones and emotions stirred by the scorn of 20,000 people might energize his game.
This is why I have long pushed for crowds to surprise opponents. When Draymond gets the ball, don’t boo. Everyone just start crying. Like, sobbing. When he’s at the free throw line, don’t wave your hands and try to distract him. Go dead silent. If you really wanna throw someone as seasoned and talented as Green off his game, you need a surprise. If you just wanna boo for booing’s sake, though, then by all means boo.
