Open Road Films has released the first official trailer for “Snowden,” the latest take on the former National Security Agency (NSA) contractor who exposed shocking illegal surveillance activities within the organization and became one of the most wanted men in the world.

The film, by Academy Award-winning director Oliver Stone, stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt as whistleblower Edward Snowden, with Nicolas Cage, Shailene Woodley, Melissa Leo, Zachary Quinto, Tom Wilkinson, Rhys Ifans, Scott Eastwood, Joely Richardson, and Timothy Olyphant rounding out the all-star cast.

Stone also had a hand in penning the movie script, which is based on both the book “The Snowden Files” by Guardian journalist Luke Harding, and “Time of the Octopus” by Snowden’s Russian lawyer Anatoly Kucherena.

The film is scheduled to be released in North America on September 16, 2016.
