The liberal media, desperate for any good news at the moment, got hugely excited about left-wing actor Michael Sheen, best known for playing Tony Blair three times onscreen, saying he was going to give up acting to become a full-time political activist.
In an interview with The Times, to publicize his new film Passengers, the 47-year-old Welsh actor was quoted as saying he planned to “work less as an actor, and possibly stop…for the time being. ”
Sheen added that with Masters of Sex canceled by Showtime, he had no upcoming acting projects and that Donald Trump’s recent Presidential election victory had sparked a “massive urgency” and that “in the same way as the Nazis had to be stopped in Germany in the Thirties, this thing that is on the rise has to be stopped.”
The Guardian headlined their news piece “Michael Sheen’s decision to swap acting for activism against ‘populist right'” while Rolling Stone declared: “Michael Sheen Quits Acting to Become Political Activist in Wales.”
Just one problem: Sheen is not quitting acting for politics as he clarified on Twitter and in a Tumblr post.
Sheen wrote in the post headlined WHAT I DID NOT SAY: “I DID NOT declare that I’m ‘quitting acting and leaving Hollywood’ to go into politics.
“In the actual original interview I said I have become more involved with community issues back at home over the last few years and because of the political situation it’s something I would like to focus on more. The interviewer asked me what that meant for my career and I said it might mean I work less as an actor and maybe even stop for a while AT SOME POINT. But I don’t really know yet.
“I certainly did NOT equate people who voted for Brexit or Trump with a fascistic ‘hard right’ that must be stopped. The majority of people in the U.K., including my hometown of Port Talbot, voted for Brexit. That is the will of the people and is to be respected. That is democracy.”
Struggling sideboob website The Huffington Post typified the initial liberal excitement over Sheen’s remarks:

They soon changed their tune:
#MP Michael Sheen Considers Acting Less As A Response To Donald Trump (UPDATED) – Huffington Post
— MinutePost – World (@MinutePost) December 18, 2016
Sheen is embarrassed by his like-minded media comrades misinterpreting his comments:
Before this gets ridiculous I said I’m thinking I might start acting less and maybe even stop for a while at some point but don’t know yet.

And yet pseudo-liberal outlets have happily gone back to lecturing the rest of us about what is and isn’t news.
