Rogue One is a movie about a bunch of inconsequential characters you’ve never heard of, but also Darth Vader. And really, what else matters?
So without spoiling too much of the non-Vader plot of the film Heat Street is kind enough to give you all the details about Vader’s role in the film.
How long is Darth Vader in Rogue One?
About less than 5 minutes. He’s only in two scenes, which are both not too long.
What happens in the Darth Vader scenes?
Vader’s first scene is him in the “bacta tank” (a liquid filled medical pod) with his helmet off and gross body exposed. You see very little of his deformed face. In the scene, an imperial officer comes to tell him that Rogue One‘s main bad guy, Director Krennic, wants to see him.
Later, a fully garbed Vader emerges from his medical seclusion to speak with Krennic. Vader chides Krennic for his various failures and even force chokes him as an intimidation tactic.
Unfortunatly as he’s choking Krennic Vader delivers one of the worst lines of any Star Wars films.
“Don’t…choke on your aspirations, Director Krennic,” Vader tells him with a dumb, totall-out-of-character pun.
In an ending scene a group of rebels are trying to escape with a large ship with the Death Star plans and hand them off to Princess Leia on the Tantive IV (the “consular ship” from the beginning of the original Star Wars)
The lights dim and Vader appears. The scene heavily mirrors Vader’s first scene in Episode IV where Vader is coming inward at the camera through a similar corridor. In Rogue One he moves outward, and towards the entrance of Tantive IV, even choking a white helmeted rebel just like he did in the first film.
He cuts down the mass of rebels with badass force and lightsaber combos, but the rebels are barely able to hand off the plans to Leia’s ship.
Who plays Darth Vader?
As with the original films, Vader is voiced by James Earl Jones. Although his voice seems pitched up and does not entirely capture the magic of the original trilogy.
The actor who suits up to play Darth Vader is not credited, but is believed to be Spencer Wilding, an imposing 6’7″ actor who has also played a White Walker in Game of Thrones.
Is there other characters from the original trilogy in Rogue One?
As for other characters from the original Star Wars who reappear in Rogue One, a young Leia and Grand Moff Tarkin (the commander of the Death Star in the original Star Wars) also have CGI faces to correspond to their original trilogy actors and are described as looking a bit off (inside the uncanny valley).
