Lin-Manuel Miranda is quitting as Hamilton on July 9.

Miranda, who plays the Founding Father who never got to be president, was coy about his plans in an interview with Rolling Stone earlier this week, but hinted that he would be gone in July. He said, “I don’t know that I want to break the news here. But I can tell you that with In the Heights, [his debut Broadway show] I did a year. I did a year and got out.”
The news is likely to be confirmed shortly after the Tony Awards on June 12 for which Hamilton received a record 16 nominations. The July date was first reported by The Hollywood Reporter.
The hip-hop musical will continue, Heat Street understands, with Javier Muñoz, currently the show’s alternate for Hamilton, taking over from Miranda. One of Muñoz’s first performances as the permanent lead will be on the 212th anniversary of Hamilton’s death on July 12.

Heat Street has also learned that Miranda is finalizing negotiations to act in the West End production of Hamilton for a four-month stint (the show will begin performances at the Victoria Palace in the fall of 2017). The details of the London deal are still being hammered out.
