Jeffrey Tambor Finds It Problematic He Won an Emmy for Playing a Transgender Woman

Last night Jeffrey Tambor won his second consecutive Emmy playing Maura Pfefferman on Amazon’s ‘‘Transparent.’’ In the show, he plays a father of three who late in life decides to transition to a woman.

In Tambor’s acceptance speech, he said that he hopes to be the last cis gender male to play a female transgender on television and encouraged Hollywood insiders to develop the talent of more transgender actors.

In defense of the show, Tambor plays a man who did not start transitioning into a woman until much later in life. With a pool of transgender talent already very small, it would be near impossible to find someone to meet these exact specifications. So it kind of makes more sense, in this circumstance, to just get an older guy to fill the role.
