Mike Judge’s movie, Idiocracy, where Americans are living in an increasingly dumbed-down world, marked by endless corporate marketing and inept leadership, is returning to theaters just in time for Election Day 2016.
The film, which is 10 years old this year, appears to have already predicted our Presidential election, and creator Mike Judge noted to The Daily Beast that he’s concerned at how quickly real life came to resemble what was supposed to be a warning.
In the movie, a US Army librarian is cryogenically frozen and then forgotten, only to wake up in a future America, populated by people who have grown increasingly stupid over the years. They water their crops with sports drinks and elect famous professional wrestlers to positions of power.
In reality, a former reality television show host and questionably wealthy real estate mogul is facing off with the wife of a former President.
So, in what the Alamo Drafthouse theater is calling a “tribute” to the electoral horrors we’re witnessing in real time, moviegoers can screen the film the night before America goes to the polls at about 20 locations across the country. They’re even working with the League of Women Voters to ensure that everyone who attends receives detailed information on how and where to vote on Election Day.
If you’re lucky enough to live near the Aero Theater in Santa Monica, you’ll also be treated to a question and answer session with movie creator Mike Judge and leading lady Maya Rudolph, who plays a time traveling hooker who becomes First Lady.
And if you’re really lucky, you’ll end up in a cryogenic experiment of your own, only to wake up years after November 8, 2016.
