James Woods is no stranger to controversy online. Just days after return to Twitter from a six-week hiatus, the right-wing actor praised Meryl Streep in the wake of her anti-Trump speech at the Golden Globes.

The actor – best known for his roles in Nixon, Videodrome, and Salvador – shared the stage with Streep early on their careers in the mini-series Holocaust.

Both were lauded for their performances, which depicted the horrors of World War II through the lens of a Jewish family struggling to survive in Nazi Germany.

“I started my career working with #MerylStreep,” wrote Woods. “That experience set a standard to which I always aspired. A national treasure and a fine woman.”

He described his work with her as a “remarkable experience.”

“I worked with Meryl in arduous circumstances (her life partner was dying) and she was a gem,” he wrote.

“I do wish #Meryl had shared her feelings with us about her monumental acting career,” he continued. “I was eager to hear that and was sad to have missed it.”

While many praised Woods for his candidness and willingness to credit the actress for her work while opposing her politics, vocal Trump supporters were upset by his praise of the acclaimed actress.

“WTF, don’t cuck for Meryl Streep after she just sh*t all over us,” wrote one of his followers, who proceeded to get into arguments with other responders who backed Woods’ recognition of Streep.

“r u kidding me? She is a dumb ass slamming our president like that,” wrote another. “james stop sucking up.”

Disagreements with Woods continued throughout the night.

“An aggrieved Trump supporter wrote: “Don’t preach 2 me Meryl Streep/biased celebrities who don’t get the Deplorables can shove it! We don’t care about u anymore!”

“Ya can’t win ’em all, Woods,” said another.  You screwed the pooch with that opinion!  #MerylStreepDouchebag”

Following his praise of Streep as an actress, Woods remained based, tweeting his criticism of the Hollywood elite.

Whatever your views on Meryl Streep’s politics, what’s certain is that James Woods is a man who gives credit where it’s due regardless of politics. You can’t hate the man for speaking his mind.
