Tony Award-winning musical Hamilton is set to open in London’s Victoria Palace Theatre in October, 2017, it was confirmed on Monday.
Lin-Manuel Miranda, the creator, writer and star of the hit hip-hop musical, about America’s founding father Alexander Hamilton, announced in August that he was in talks with theatre mogul Cameron Mackintosh to bring Hamilton to London’s West End due its phenomenal success in New York.
It has now been officially announced the production will premiere in October, 2017 at the currently-closed Victoria Palace Theatre, which was previously home to Billy Elliot the Musical before undergoing an extensive multi-million dollar renovation.
“The support HAMILTON has received from our British fans has been incredible – I have been reminded of their love, which is just as our King George would want it to be!” Lin-Manuel said in a statement.
“I’m thrilled the show will be shared with UK audiences starting in the fall of 2017 at the beautiful Victoria Palace Theatre.”
“Just occasionally in life the stars align as they have now, and I have the perfect theatre available for one of the most brilliant, original and entertaining musicals I have ever seen,” Cameron said.
“The moment I saw Lin Manuel’s remarkable HAMILTON I knew that this was a musical with a phenomenal story and score which will be performed somewhere in the world as long as people want to go to the theatre.”
The news comes the day after the musical scored 11 Tony Awards in New York on Sunday night, including Best Musical, Best Original Score and Best Book of a Musical, plus a number of acting prizes for Leslie Odom, Jr., Daveed Diggs, and Renee Elise Goldsberry.
It went into the show with a record-breaking 16 nominations, but fell just short of the record 12 wins held by The Producers since 2001. Registration for priority booking for the highly-anticipated London tickets opened on Monday ahead of the official ticket opening in November.
