Javier Muñoz will take over from Lin-Manuel Miranda as the lead in Broadway musical phenomenon Hamilton, Heat Street can exclusively reveal.
As Heat Street revealed last month, Hamilton‘s composer and star Lin-Manuel Miranda is leaving the hip-hop re-telling of Founding Father Alexander Hamilton in July when he will have performed the title role for the musical at the Richard Rogers Theater for a year and prior to that at the Public Theater.
Muñoz, Miranda’s alternate, stars in Hamilton every Sunday and covers for him when he has missed shows during the week. He has performed for President Obama and Jay-Z .

Muñoz was diagnosed with cancer last October and missed several performances over a two-month period to undergo surgery and radiation treatment. Despite this, he is considered strong enough to take on the leading role.
Like Lin-Manuel, Muñoz comes from a Puerto Rican family and grew up in New York City. He also took over from Miranda in his first musical In the Heights.
Unlike Hamilton’s nemesis Aaron Burr, VP Muñoz is being given his shot at the title role. When the news is everywhere else-you can thank us by sending us tickets to the show.
