Fashionably Lame! New York Times Hits New Low With Fawning ‘Celebrity Spawn’ List

The New York Times Style section has long taken pride in inhabiting deeply shallow waters but has hit hit rock bottom with its new feature, “Fashion’s New It Kids”?

The article begins: “It may seem as if Gigi and Bella Hadid, Kendall Jenner, Hailey Baldwin, Lily-Rose Depp, Brooklyn Beckham and Georgia May Jagger only recently swept onto the fashion scene, but a new group of celebrities’ children are already rising through the ranks.

“They’re as young as 14 and no older than 23, have thousands and sometimes millions of Instagram followers (because having Instagram is a given) and have appeared in campaigns and shows for the likes of Chanel, Miu Miu, Alexander Wang, Calvin Klein and Stella McCartney.”

Writer Valeriya Safronova initially attempts to put a brave face on such banal clickbait fare: “Call them Generation Celebrity Spawn. They were famous initially because of their parentage — household names in music, film and modeling such as Jude Law, Cindy Crawford, Lauryn Hill, Lionel Richie, Pamela Anderson and Daniel Day-Lewis, to name a few — and the luck of their genes.”

But the writer soon descends into a seemingly never-ending generic profiles of B-list progeny (or as she describes it “a field guide to Generation C.S., ordered by the size of their Instagram followings.”)

The “field guide” is entirely culled from interviews that ‘Generation C.S.’ have given to other publications that the Times would consider its inferior.  It includes such observations as Kaia Gerber “has said she would like to study criminal psychology. It’s the same degree Gigi Hadid pursued at the New School before taking a leave of absence.”

Safronova soon runs out of ‘It’ kids (she ignores Tiffany Trump) to profile so she writes about multiple offspring of Cindy Crawford and Jude Law.

Seemingly aware that such repellant content belongs nowhere near its usual vantage point of Mount Olympus,  the Times makes no mention of the feature in its online guide to the contents of the day’s newspaper.

The Style section has long been the fawning, shallow “other” personality of the notoriously schizophrenic Times. While the Times lauds itself for its Pulitzer Prize winning journalism, its Style section debases itself twice a week (on Thursdays and Sundays) with obsequious flattery to the world of inherited wealth.

But even by these standards, the ‘It kids’ article is remarkable. It might be even worse than the Times‘s ‘Here Comes the Snap Pack’ debacle from April and the fawning Snapchat profile that declared “It’s not too early, however, to say that Snapchat is a fitting symbol for 2016.”

Amusingly, there existed a news peg the Times overlooked that they could have hung this nonsense on- three of the six stars Dolce & Gabbana are featuring in their new Spring 2017 Millennials campaign, which the Italian fashion house just unveiled, are also profiled in the Times piece. (The Times cited previous D&G fashion shows that the ‘It kids’ graced but made no mention of the new ad campaign).

However much you might lament the US Presidential election and all the icons who have died this year, take solace in the fact that the Times Style Section is experiencing a worse 2016 than you…
