(WENN) — Rocker Jesse Hughes has questioned whether security officials at Paris’ Bataclan theatre had been tipped off about the terror attacks last year (15). The Eagles of Death Metal frontman was onstage with his group on 13 November (15) when gunmen stormed the venue and opened fire, killing 89 people. The bandmembers were able to escape unharmed, and Jesse has since been opening up about the night of terror in various interviews.
He recently sat down for a chat with America’s Fox Business Network and during the first part of the interview, which aired on Wednesday night (09Mar16), the singer revealed he started feeling uneasy when he first arrived at the concert hall after the backstage security guard failed to even look at him.
“I immediately went to the promoter and said, ‘Who’s that guy? I want to put another dude on,'” Hughes recalled. “And he goes, ‘Well, some of the other guards aren’t here yet,’ and eventually I found out that six or so wouldn’t show up at all.”
The rocker declined to speculate about why the guards didn’t show up “out of respect for the police investigating,” but he made his feelings clear by adding, “It seems rather obvious that they had a reason not to show up,” suggesting they may have been made aware of the attack in advance.
The second part of Hughes’ interview airs on Thursday (10Mar16). Eagles of Death Metal made an emotional return to Paris last month (Feb16) to finish the show which had been tragically cut short. They honored those lost in the November massacre by pausing halfway through their first song, I Only Want You, for an 89 second silence, to mark the lives lost.
Security was understandably tight around the Olympia venue, with police surrounding the building and the nearby streets to ensure no further attacks could take place. The band was forced to scrap the rest of its European tour days later so Hughes could recover from a finger injury.
