Aging Rock Stars Try to Stay Relevant by Trashing Donald Trump

All sorts of celebrities are speaking out to express their political opinions these days. More accurately, they are all expressing the same political opinion: Donald Trump is bad.

Trump hasn’t even been sworn in as president yet, but his election has already inspired a number of aging rock stars to release edgy “protest anthems” like they did during the George W. Bush administration.

Green Day, the aging punk sellouts who recorded an entire anti-Bush album in 2004 (America Idiot), have released a new anti-Trump track called “Troubled Times.” The lyrics are pretty deep:

What part of history we learned

When it’s repeated

Some things will never overcome

If we don’t seek it

The world stops turning

Paradise burning

So don’t think twice

We live in troubled times

We live in troubled times

We live in troubled times

Another musical act from the 1990s, Fiona Apple, has recorded a new song called “Tiny Hands” that she hopes will become a rallying cry for the Women’s March on Washington to protest Trump’s inauguration.

It’s not really a song, but rather a minute-long chant in which Apple repeats the same line over and over: “We don’t want your tiny hands anywhere near our underpants.” The track is peppered with audio of Trump’s infamous “grab her by the pussy” comment.

Not every musical artist you liked during your angsty teenage year is attacking the incoming president in his or her songs. Some of them are praising the outgoing one.

Ani DiFranco, for example, has released a new song called “Deferred Gratification” that she dedicated to President Obama for being “the most awesome fucking human being any citizen could ever have the privilege of voting for as their president.”

The lyrics don’t mention Trump by name, but imply that he is bad:

deferred gratification

you are my new best friend

i vote in every election

hope someday these kids

are gonna help us win

but look how weary the chief

it’ll be a relief

to someday hear him say

get it yourself

get it yourself
