Responding to Donald Trump’s rollback of Obama-era transgender bathroom policies, Yelp is introducing a new feature that helps people find gender-neutral bathrooms.
“People in this company were so incensed by what’s going on in our country, and to potential employees and customers, that they wanted to do something to support,” Yelp’s head of diversity and inclusion told TechCrunch. “The product team got it done within a couple of days. They dropped everything to add this feature. I’m overjoyed and proud.”
To collect data, Yelp has begun prompting consumers to say whether or not businesses they have visited offer a single-stall bathroom. Businesses can also opt to edit their profile, specifying that they have gender-neutral facilities. And in the next few weeks, transgender customers will be able to search specifically for businesses with gender-neutral restrooms, Yelp said in a news release.
In addition to adding this new feature, Yelp joined more than 50 other tech companies in submitting an amicus brief in support of Gavin Grimm, a transgender student in Virginia banned from using the men’s bathroom at school.
