The University of Vermont has hung a Black Lives Matter flag beside the American flag and state flag on campus, keeping it up over the weekend.
The Student Government Association sponsored the flag, which is associated with the controversial Black Lives Matter movement. The student government’s president, Jason Maulucci, told local media it had done so “to show symbolic support for our community when so many are struggling with violence and search for justice in this country.”
The University’s president, Tom Sullivan, also voiced support for the on-campus display of the flag, though he said it shouldn’t be interpreted as an official endorsement of the movement.
“I think given this particular time in the history of America, our students thought it was an appropriate time over the next couple of days to show their support for black communities,” Sullivan said.
In the past, the university has displayed other flags in the same location, including a gay pride flag after the Orlando shootings and a Haitian flag after the devastating earthquake there.
