Over Labor Day weekend, a flyer was posted in a University of Massachusetts dorm, telling residents to be wary of using memes about the gorilla Harambe, who was tragically murdered in May at the Cincinnati Zoo.
The dorm’s resident advisers (RAs) didn’t seem to understand the cultural phenomenon that is Harambe memes, and took reference to the gorilla as a “microaggression” toward African American students.

The letter also alluded to the popular phrase “dicks out for Harambe,” a call of solidarity with the slain Western lowland gorilla.
“To be very clear: using popularizes[sic] phrases/hashtags which encourage the exposition of body parts runs the risk of being reported as a Title IX incident,” the flyer read. “These are sexual assault incidences that not only get reported to Community Standards, but also the Dean of Students.”
Not only are these RAs robbing the residents of their 1st amendment rights, but they are robbing Harambe of his legacy. RIP in peace Harambe.
