After losing a $100 million class-action lawsuit with its employees, Uber still refuses to add a tipping function to its app. And, according to the company, it’s at least in part because management thinks Uber’s customers are too racist to tip correctly.
An Uber spokeman, explaining in a Medium post, cited a 2008 Cornell study that found people tip white servers better than black servers.
As part of the lawsuit, employees are allowed to tell riders that tipping is not included in their payment — but riders can’t tip through the Uber app. If riders wish to tip, they will have to do so in cash.
Uber says on their website that there is no need to tip, but drivers only receive the fair, minus the 25% cut Uber takes. So any additional money would help drivers, who are at the mercy of Uber’s pay cuts.
So, apparently Uber thinks it’s okay that we stiff their drivers, as long as we do it equally.
