Just 9 percent of Native Americas are offended by the Washington Redskins name, according to a new Washington Post poll.

In response to the question, “Do you find that name offensive, or doesn’t it bother you?” 90 percent of Native Americans polled said they weren’t bothered by the name, which has long been the subject of controversy stoked by critics who demand it be changed to something less “racist.”

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, for example, has been an outspoken opponent, and has urged team owner Dan Snyder to change the “derogatory” Redskins name.

Suzan Harjo, a Native American who is leading a legal challenge against the Washington Redskins’ trademark protections, rejected the poll findingsĀ as not “valid.” Others have sought to “unskew” the results.

Team owner Dan Snyder, who is hardly a sympathetic character in the controversy, said he was “gratified” by the results.

The Redskins are a perennially underperforming football team plagued by poor management decisions.
