In the midst of Pride Month, the hashtag #HeterosexualPrideDay began trending on Twitter early Wednesday morning, with some users calling for equality, tolerance, and fairness in celebrating heterosexuality.

Others, however, criticized the hashtag for being attention-seeking and offensive to the LGBT community.

Many tweeps voiced their opposition loud and clear, arguing that straight people were neither oppressed nor persecuted for being open about their sexual orientation, while some likened the hashtag to #AllLivesMatter and efforts to organize a White History Month or an International Men’s Day.

The nation’s first gay parade was held in June 1970 to commemorate the first year anniversary of the Stone Wall Inn riots — the week long uprising of New York youth following a crackdown on the popular West Village gay bar. The month of June has since been the month of choice to celebrate LGBT rights around the world.

As one discerning tweep pointed out, the #HeterosexualPrideDay hashtag could well have been the doing of a mischievous troll, who knew exactly how to titillate the Twittersphere.

So far, there’s no flag and no parade. Don’t get trolled so easily, Rainbow Twitter peeps.
