Growing Movement Demands a Trigger Warning for Hit Movie ‘Split’

In the future, trigger warnings might be standard practice for films. (Actually they kind of exist already in the form of the movie ratings system.)

The petition to boycott M Night Shyamalan’s  latest thriller Split, over its portrayal of mental illness, didn’t quite work—the movie has grossed $78 million after 10 days. But a growing online movement is calling for Universal to establish a trigger warning—an alert prior to the screening informing viewers that the film they are about to watch contains potentially distressing material— for the film starring James McAvoy as a man with 23 different personalities who kidnaps three girls.

The trigger warning pleas arise owing to [SPOILER ALERT] the film’s incest/child sex abuse scenes. Interestingly, they’ve mostly come from people who love the movie which is the first hit from Shyamalan in years:
