‘Racist’ Gigi Hadid Accused of Mocking Asians in ‘Squinty Eye’ Buddha Video

Supermodel Gigi Hadid is back in hot water after a video surfaced over the weekend, showing her making “squinty eyes” next to a statue of Buddha.

Her sister, Bella Hadid, posted the video of Gigi at her birthday dinner, “giggling and squinting” while she held up a cookie decorated to look like the religious leader.

The Internet was not pleased, quickly calling Hadid and her sister racists and “anti-Asian,” accusing her of “mocking Asian people” and even suggesting the starlet “fall in a hole.”

Bella removed the video, but a fan Instagram account for Gigi’s boyfriend, pop star Zayn Malik, reposted the video, making it fully available to the Internet for a second wave of criticism.

The video doesn’t exactly make Hadid look good and Twitter was quick to point out that Hadid isn’t a particularly “woke” celebrity. She was forced to apologize just a few weeks ago for an impression of Melania Trump that angry Trump supporters also branded “racist.”

But she was also probably just imitating a cookie.

A few fans tried to rescue the singer by pointing out that Hadid’s father, Mohamed Hadid, is Palestinian-American, and that Gigi’s boyfriend Zayn is Pakistani. Even her mother, Yolanda Hadid—and even Zayn himself—tried to reassure the angry crowd.

Neither of those responses are likely to help Gigi. She might just have to post another apology.
