The Aftermath of the Triggering

IMG_2852

Late last month, Campus Reform, an online publication that reports on liberal biases on college campuses, published an article about a highly offended social justice warrior (SJW) who attended a conservative event addressing topics of political correctness and so-called triggering. The event was titled, appropriately, “The Triggering”. Included in this article was a video where I recorded Cora Segal, a protestor seated in the audience, who was throwing an adult temper tantrum.

Triggly Puff

Below is another video I made – now exclusive to Heat Street – of when Cora Segal sought to disrupt the free-speech speaking event. It was taken after she was forced to move to the balcony, where she continued to argue and shout:

Since the release of this story, millions of people have seen seen my video and countless others have written about it. Some of these articles included harsh commentary about Ms. Segal’s actions as well as her appearance. She has even been given the title “Trigglypuff”, a play off how easily she was “triggered” combined with a reference to the Pokemon character called Jigglypuff.

But Ms. Segal was acting very deliberately in an attempt to disrupt the event by shrieking so that others could not hear the arguments made – as my video showed. The exclusive video above demonstrates Segal continuing to argue with students on the balcony. I can also now reveal that, before the event, Segal widely distributed a flyer arguing that because of her claimed personal trauma UMass College Republicans had no right to use the word ‘The Triggering’. Here is the flyer she gave me as soon as I found my seat:

flyer 2 yes

It should be perfectly obvious that Segal actively sought to publicize her disruption of the event in advance. Yet protestors apparently objected to reporting on their own publicity stunt.

As a result of recording this video and exposing the way that many SJWs conduct themselves, I was confronted — in the delightful manner that is so consistent with the Social Justice philosophy — by a friend of, and fellow protestor with, Ms. Segal, named Jennie Chenkin.

Numerous threatening and demanding tweets were fired off at me, some of which I publish here:

silly jess silly 2 jess

But the feminist revenge didn’t stop at Twitter. Ms. Chenkin wrote letters to the Dean of Students at Mount Holyoke College (where I go to school) and to the Student Government at the University of Massachusetts Amherst (where the event took place).

In these letters, she claimed that because I published the videos, I was responsible for the harassment of others. She accused me of spreading libel against Ms. Segal simply by sharing a video of her friend’s ridiculous and public behavior.

While I understand that Jennie only wanted to help her friend, her many demands were outrageous. Two of the most memorable were :

  • “I demand that disciplinary action be taken against Kassy Dillon who decided that cyber bullying and libel are okay”
  • “I request that Kassy Dillon be prohibited from writing or publishing for Campus Reform or any other Mount Holyoke-affiliated publication.”

Ms. Chenkin may have no legal grounds for her demands, but it is still clear that she and her associates want to silence those they disagree with. Her (rather entertaining) letters to college and University officials were shameless attempts to silence conservative views by taking aim at me and the freedom of the press.

Her letters —  and the video of Ms. Segal’s adult temper tantrum — are evidence of how today’s college students can’t tolerate people with differing views. In their minds, it is okay to look different and be from different places, but having differing ideologies is entirely unacceptable.

Despite Jennie Chenkin’s best efforts, I’m writing this article for Heat Street, untouched by the long arm of the campus law. Though I suppose this isn’t Campus Reform, so Ms. Chenkin should be pleased… right?

Probably not.

This issue is bigger than my video – or Ms. Chenkin’s letter. I am happy that I was able to share that video with the world. We conservatives are continually being silenced on campus and penalized for having different views by peers, professors, and campus administrators alike.

While some commentators have made inappropriate attacks on Ms. Segal for her appearance, the real issue here is her actions. While no real action has been taken against me for publishing this video, this is not the norm. Conservatives all over the country are being silenced by the movement to create “safe spaces” where the sensitive can’t be “triggered”, and limiting speech to certain areas on campus labeled “free speech zones”.

This kind of censorship is not only dangerous to conservatives; it is dangerous to people of all backgrounds. I should not have to fear disciplinary action for exercising my first amendment rights. If you censor someone because you feel that what they are saying is offensive, what happens when someone finds your words offensive?  Free speech and free expression are rights that must be protected especially in places of higher education.
