Colorado College Promotes ‘Healthy Lifestyle’ Program, Is Denounced for ‘Body Shaming’

Colorado College, like most schools across the country, promotes “healthy lifestyle” programs for students. As a result, the college is being accused of “body shaming” and promoting “body privilege.”

Senior student Jade Frost penned a blistering op-ed in The Feminist Wire on Thursday, in which she argued that by encouraging “healthy” lifestyles among its students, the college was fostering “a culture of body shaming,” especially with respect to male students.

“While there is an importance to live a healthy lifestyle and take care of your body, there is also an importance to not shame men in thinking that they are not ‘man enough’ because they do not display physical strength and washboard abs,” Frost wrote.

Colorado College was promoting health lifestyles too aggressively, Frost argued, in ways that are “overwhelming and exclusionary,” and make it “difficult to navigate public spaces for men on campus.”

Frost took issue with the campus fitness center due to the “unspoken rule that the cardio section is for the feminine and the weight room is for the masculine,” and criticized the healthy food options in the cafeteria because it subtly shames students who aren’t physically fit, or something, because they are seen as “not having body management.”
