‘Clock Kid,’ Part 2: Oregon Student Suspended for Homemade Device, but No Media Outrage This Time

A student at Sandy High School in Oregon was suspended for bringing a homemade phone charger to school because it looked like a bomb.

Levi Frunk brought his homemade charger to school and left it in the locker room to charge his phone while he attended weight training. His coach, however, did not realize it was a charger and he started evacuating the area. The situation was cleared up quickly, but the 15-year-old Frunk was still suspended for a day and a half and was not allowed to play in his homecoming football game.

The story is eerily similar to the tale of Ahmed the Clock Kid, with one glaring difference; no media outrage. When Ahmed had the police called because a clock he made looked like a bomb, the media went into full defense mode. Even President Obama jumped into the fray.

Cool clock, Ahmed. Want to bring it to the White House? We should inspire more kids like you to like science. It’s what makes America great.

— President Obama (@POTUS) September 16, 2015

Noticeably though, there was no tweet from President Obama inviting Frunk to the White House. In fact, a Twitter search for Levi Frunk brings up a total of two tweets, none of which have anything to do with this story. Honestly, it was a really cool invention and Frunk deserves some attention for building his own charger at 15 years old. He took his suspension like a champ and will hopefully continue showing his creativity and intelligence.
