While Hollywood’s biggest stars pack into the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles to celebrate movies and the people who make them, the protagonist of Jordan Peele’s directorial debut “Get Out” will be trying to survive a visit to meet the parents.
The film, “Get Out,” is a Stepford Wives-esque thriller that deals in racism. With a rare 100% Rotten Tomatoes critics score, “Get Out” is about an interracial couple, Chris Washington (Daniel Kaluuya) and Rose Armitage (Allison Williams), visiting the estate of the girl’s parents together for the first time. Chris later learns many of the estates black residents have gone missing.
Peele, known as part of popular comedy duo Key and Peele, has said the film is “very personal,” though far from autobiographical. Peele is married to white comedic actress Chelsea Peretti.
“Get Out,” distributed by Comcast Corp.-owned Universal Pictures and produced under the banner of horror flick pro Jason Blum’s Blumhouse Productions, is expected to garner $27 million in its debut weekend, according to forecasts from Box Office analysts.
The film brought in a reported $1.8 million in early Thursday showings. “Get Out,” with a production budget of $4.5 million is all but guaranteed to be a success at the box office.
Hollywood studios tend to shy away from opening big films in the shadow of the industry’s biggest night. “Get Out” is the stand out among new releases this weekend. “Collide,” from Open Road Films, and Lions Gate Entertainment Corp.’s animated “Rock Dog,” co-produced with China’s Huayi Brothers, are also opening in wide release this weekend. Neither film is expected to bring in more than $5.0 million, according to Box Office estimates.
