New research from Global Web Index (GWI) shows that while more people than ever may be engaging with social networks they are more cautious about what they do and don’t share.

GWI’s data, which draws on responses from a panel of 16-64-year-old web users around the world every quarter, shows that over the past two years there has been a 33% decrease in people using social media for expressing their opinion, a 32% drop in the sharing of details about daily life and a 16% drop in people using platforms to share photos and videos with others.

However, at the same time, according to the responses of those polled, social media is growing in stature as a way of finding work with a 27% increase in people saying they use it to network for work and a 17% increase in using it as a means of promoting work completed.
