During the 2012 presidential campaign, Republican nominee Mitt Romney called Russia “our number one geopolitical foe” and was relentlessly mocked by President Obama and his allies in the Democratic Party.

“The Cold War is over,” they said. During one of the presidential debates, Obama quipped: “The 1980s are now calling to ask for their foreign policy back.” It was seen as a witty and devastating takedown at the time. Obama had famously “reset” the U.S. relationship with Russia, and everything was going just fine.

Romney was basically right, though. In the years since Obama was reelected, Vladimir Putin made a habit of embarrassing our president on the world stage — in Ukraine, in Syria, and in cyberspace. Now that Russia appears to have targeted the Democratic Party and Hillary Clinton specifically, Obama and his allies are suddenly very concerned about the Russian threat and demanding that everyone else be outraged.
